Description of Service

This service provides faculty and staff with access to both departmental and individual file storage services where data files can be appropriately backed up and restored when needed. Files can be easily and conveniently accessed from anywhere on any device including desktop, laptop, and mobile devices. Services for secure file transfer and sharing of files with collaborators outside of the university are provided as well.

The service provides:

  • Individual file storage for all faculty and staff that can be accessed from on campus or remotely.
  • Individual file sharing to make it easy to share files with people on and off campus in a safe and secure manner.
  • Departmental storage for departments and units to support collaboration and the sharing of files.
  • Document workflow and collaboration to help share the editing and management of documents and assist with day-to-day business, as well as long-term retention and storage of electronic documents, through SharePoint Online.
  • High-capacity storage for researchers through DataStore.
  • Shared data storage for research groups to create a collaborative space and share large files through DataShare.

Local IT support personnel can request set up access to departmental file storage but instructions are also available online.

Service Exclusions, Limitations, and Restrictions

  • Some file storage options have quotas. Consult the specific support documentation for details.
  • Storage and distribution of digital content must comply with legislation such as the Copyright Act.

Service Charges

  • There are generally no charges associated with the file storage and sharing service, but some charges may be associated with research data storage. Contact for more information about pricing.
