Wireless and Wired Network Services
- Service available to: Faculty, Staff, Students, Researchers
- Themes: Collaboration, Communication
- Service Category: IT Infrastructure
- Service Areas: Network
Description of Service
This service provides all faculty, staff, researchers, and students with access to network connectivity using the U of S network and the Internet. Network connectivity is available through:
- Wireless network – wireless network connectivity to the U of S network and Internet services from indoor, and some outdoor, locations at U of S facilities.
- Wired network – access to the U of S Local Area Network (LAN) and Internet through wall outlets connected to a desktop, laptop, or printer.
- EduRoam – wireless service allowing visiting faculty, staff, and students from participating EduRoam institutions or travelling U of S faculty, staff, and students access to Internet services free of charge.
- VPN (Virtual Private Network) - network access to restricted university resources from non-U of S locations (e.g. from home or while travelling).
This service also provides wireless and wired network infrastructure at university satellite locations; dedicated high-speed, fibre-optic paths between research organizations on and off campus; and access to high-speed Canadian and international research networks (SRnet/CANARIE).
Access
- Wireless Network (uofs-secure) – Laptops and devices need to be configured before they can access the network. Wireless set-up guides (login required) are available for Windows , Macintosh , Linux and Mobile operating systems.
- Wired Network – Members of the university community must register their personal desktop computers and laptops. Instructions for registering devices are provided online (login required).
- EduRoam – In order to use EduRoam while traveling, laptops and devices must be set up on the U of S EduRoam wireless network (eduroam) and must have VPN software installed. Instructions for setting up eduroarm are available online. (login required)
- VPN - In order to use the VPN, the VPN client must be download and installed. The device must then be connected to the U of S VPN service using a valid NSID and password. Instructions for setting up the VPN (login required) are available online.

Service Standards
- Service levels and support commitments are outlined in the ICT Core Services Service Level Agreement.
Service Exclusions, Limitations, and Restrictions
- Bandwidth restrictions are used to prioritize network traffic between the Internet and the U of S network so that service levels are maintained and network access is fair. Guidelines for bandwidth restrictions are as follows:
- Applications that are sensitive to network congestion due to speed, timing, and delay—such as voice and video—are given the highest priority.
- P2P (peer-to-peer) file sharing will be limited to a fraction of the available bandwidth and will be further limited during times of congestion.
- The public access wireless network (uofs-public) has limited bandwidth and has limited access to some U of S services.
- All other traffic will be granted fair access to the remainder of available bandwidth.
Service Charges
- There are no charges associated with using the existing U of S wireless and wired network services.
